ABOUT Durham Beaches
Welcome to Durham Beaches
The Durham Region Weekly Beach Report provides information on the water quality at public beaches in the region. The report includes the results of the weekly water quality testing conducted by the Durham Region Health Department during the summer season. The report covers all the beaches in the region, including the newest addition, Iroquois Beach located in Whitby. However, the Health Department no longer tests water samples from Elgin Pond due to the absence of a designated swimming area. The report aims to inform beach visitors about safe swimming areas by identifying beaches with high levels of bacteria in the water. Please note that the reported results reflect routine, weekly monitoring conducted by Health Department staff unless otherwise indicated.
Top Beaches In Durham
This Canada Day long weekend, swimmers in Durham Region will have many options to choose from as ten out of fourteen beaches have been declared safe for swimming. The health department of the region conducted tests and identified two beaches as unsafe for swimming, while the other two beaches were inaccessible for testing due to restricted access. If the E. coli levels exceed the standard limit, beaches are considered unsafe for swimming. However, even if the beaches have tested safe, the health department advises beachgoers to avoid going into the water for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall, as bacteria levels can rise due to run-off.
